Rent vs buy

What it really costs.

Buying looks cheaper over time, until you add delivery, repairs and the risk of replacing a machine that's died.

*Monthly plan, including the £25 deposit — which comes back after 6 months of on-time payments. On the annual plan the totals drop to £228 in year one and £684 over three. If you plan to stay in one home for many years and can afford a machine upfront, buying can work out cheaper. Renting suits you if you want a small upfront cost, no repair risk and the freedom to hand it back.

Pricing questions

How much does it cost to rent a washing machine?

£25 a month, £75 every 3 months or £228 a year — your choice. On the monthly plan you pay £50 upfront: a £25 refundable deposit plus your first month. Delivery and repairs are free. Fitting is an optional extra if you'd like us to connect it.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Only on the monthly plan — £25, included in your £50 upfront payment. It's refunded after 6 months of on-time payments. Quarterly and annual plans need no deposit at all.

Do you fit the washing machine?

Fitting isn't included. We deliver free and carry the machine in to where you want it. You can connect it yourself or use your own plumber; most machines just need a cold water tap and a drain. If you'd rather we fitted it, ask when you book. It's an extra charge and we'll give you a price first.

What's the minimum rental period?

3 months. After that you can keep the machine for as long as you like, or cancel with 30 days' notice.

Is it cheaper to rent or buy a washing machine?

On the monthly plan, renting costs £325 in the first year (£50 upfront, then 11 × £25 — with the £25 deposit refunded). The annual plan is £228 a year. A decent new machine costs £400–£600 upfront, plus delivery and any repairs once the warranty ends. Renting spreads the cost and removes the risk of a big repair bill.

Is GoCardless safe?

Yes. GoCardless is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority and is used by thousands of UK businesses. Every payment is protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee, so if anything is taken in error you get a full, immediate refund from your bank.
